Surrealism 1920s-1940s



  • The Surrealist art movement was dedicated to expressing the imagination in a method that was free from the control, convention, and reason. 
  • Surrealism was similar to Dadaism in that it was anti rationalist, but was different in that it was lighter in spirit.
  • Surrealism is a style in which fantastical visual imagery from the subconscious mind is used with no intention of making the work logically comprehensible.

Cubism 1907-1914


  • Cubism was sparked in 1907 by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and is one of the most potent art movements of the 20th century.
  • Cubist artists believed in breaking up a subject matter, analyzing it, and then re assembling it in abstract form.
  • There were three main stages to the development of the cubist movement: Facet Cubism, Analytic Cubism, and Synthetic Cubism.

Fauvism 1900-1920


  • Fauvism was the first of the major avant-garde movement in European twentieth century art. 
  • Fauvism is characterized by intensely vivid, unnatural paintings which utilize bright colors to convey a mood. 
  • The fauvist style grew out of the Pointillism movement and is characterized by its primitive style, and less natural forms.

Post-Impressionism 1880-1900


  • The Post-Impressionism movement furthered Impressionism but rejected its limitations
  •  It still employed thick application of paint, vivid use of colour, distinctive brush strokes, but also emphasized geometric or distorted forms and used arbitrary or unnatural colors.
  • There are other names such as Symbolism or Modernism that can be used in conjunction with this movement, these terms are broader and apply to more than art in France, but also to literature and architecture throughout Europe.

Artists of Impressionism 1870-1890

  •  The Impressionists used scientific research into the physics of color to achieve a more exact representation of color and tone.
  • Impressionist art is a style in which the artist captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a glimpse of it.
  • Their pictures are very bright and vibrant and these artists capture their images with bold colors.
